What is Op COURAGE?
Life after serving in the armed forces can bring incredible opportunities, but it can also come with challenges that aren’t always visible. That’s why the NHS created Op COURAGE: The Veterans Mental Health and Wellbeing Service. It’s a dedicated service providing mental health and wellbeing support to veterans and their families.
Whether you’re adjusting to civilian life, dealing with past experiences or simply need someone to talk to, Op COURAGE is here to help.
Who can use Op COURAGE?
If you’ve served in the UK armed forces, even for just a single day, you may be eligible for support. To access the service, you’ll need to:
- live in England
- have served in the UK armed forces for at least one full day
- be registered with a GP in England, or be willing and eligible to register
- be able to provide your military service number
If you meet those criteria, Op COURAGE is open to you.
If you’re not registered with a GP, find out more about how to find a GP in England. And remember to tell them you’ve served.

How to access Op COURAGE
There are several ways. You can:
Contact the service directly. You can reach out yourself, or someone close to you (like a family member or friend) can do it for you.
Ask your GP or another healthcare professional to refer you.
Get a referral through a charity, many of which work closely with veterans’ services.
No matter which route you choose, the aim is the same: to make sure you get the right support at the right time.
