Support for veterans in the criminal justice system: How NOVA Scotland can help
Life after service can be a positive transition for many. But for some veterans, challenges such as poor physical or mental health, homelessness, debt or substance misuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system. That’s where NOVA Scotland comes in.
This guide explains how NOVA Scotland supports veterans across Scotland who are involved with the justice system, helping them overcome challenges and rebuild their lives.
Time to read:
What is NOVA Scotland?
It’s a specialist service, run by the Forces Employment Charity, that supports veterans who are in contact with the criminal justice system.
It works in partnership with Police Scotland, the Scottish Prison Service, and Criminal Justice Social Work teams across all 32 local authorities in Scotland.
Who NOVA Scotland supports
NOVA Scotland supports veterans who may be experiencing:
- housing insecurity or homelessness
- debt and financial difficulties
- physical or mental health issues, including PTSD
- alcohol, drug or gambling misuse
- involvement in the justice system
- difficulties adjusting to civilian life
Support is available at any stage – whether it’s early contact with police, during court proceedings or after release from custody.
They can also support families of veterans affected by involvement in the justice system.
A personalised, one‑to‑one approach
Every veteran referred to NOVA Scotland is assigned a dedicated caseworker.
This caseworker:
- completes a full individual needs assessment
- identifies immediate risks and longer‑term challenges
- works with the veteran to create a tailored support plan
- provides ongoing support throughout the journey
This one‑to‑one relationship ensures each veteran receives consistent, personalised support from someone who understands their situation.

Support across Scotland
NOVA Scotland operates nationwide, supporting veterans across the whole of Scotland.
Eligibility includes anyone who has served at least one day in:
- the armed forces
- the reserves
- the Merchant Mariners on legally defined military operations
Support is also available for their families where needed.
Confidential, non‑judgemental support
NOVA Scotland provides support that is:
- confidential
- respectful
- non‑judgemental
Veterans are treated with dignity and understanding, recognising both their service and their potential for positive change.
A pathway to change and stability
The goal of NOVA Scotland’s support is not just to respond to crisis – it’s to create lasting change.
By addressing health, housing, finances and wellbeing together, NOVA Scotland helps veterans:
- regain control over their lives
- build stability
- reduce the risk of re‑offending
- move forward with confidence
