Support for veterans in the criminal justice system: How NOVA Wales can help

Most former service personnel transition successfully to civilian life. But for some, challenges such as poor physical or mental health, homelessness, debt or substance misuse can lead to contact with the criminal justice system. That’s where NOVA Wales can help.

This guide explains how NOVA Wales supports veterans in the justice system, helping them address underlying challenges and rebuild their lives.

This guidance is for Wales. There are separate guides for England and Scotland.

What is NOVA Wales?

It’s a specialist service, run by the Forces Employment Charity, that supports veterans in contact with the criminal justice system.

NOVA Wales operates a core service focused on veterans living in South Wales, with the ambition to expand nationally to provide consistent support across Wales.

Who NOVA Wales supports

NOVA Wales currently supports veterans in contact with the justice system in South Wales. There are hopes to roll out the service nationally.

All veterans at risk or in contact with the justice system are eligible for support, regardless of rank, service length or offence. A veteran is defined as someone who has served at least one day in the armed forces, reserves or Merchant Navy.

Working together across South Wales

NOVA Wales works closely with key partners to identify and support veterans in need.

This includes collaboration with:

  • South Wales Police
  • HMPPS
  • healthcare organisations
  • the wider armed forces community

This joined‑up approach ensures veterans receive coordinated, effective support tailored to their needs.
