How the Veterans In-Service Injury Network supports veterans in Scotland
If you live in Scotland and have a physical injury or health condition related to your military service that is still causing concern, the Veterans In‑Service Injury Network may be able to help.
Here’s a guide explaining what you need to know.

This guidance is for Scotland. There are separate guides for England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
What is the Veterans In-Service Injury Network?
The Veterans In-Service Injury Network (VISIN) is a Scotland-wide NHS service, developed by the Scottish Government and hosted by NHS Highland.
It provides an independent, expert clinical review of:
- physical injuries linked to military service that remain a concern despite treatment
- conditions that may have developed earlier than expected because of service
This could include issues such as injuries that have not healed properly, or longer-term conditions like joint, hearing, respiratory or skin problems.

What does the Veterans In-Service Injury Network offer?
VISIN does not replace your NHS care. Instead, it brings together specialists with an understanding of military life to review your case and make recommendations.
This may include:
- advice tailored to your specific physical health needs
- recommendations for further treatment or referrals
- support for NHS staff involved in your care to better understand military-related health issues
- signposting to additional support, including the MoD, charities and local organisations
Who can use the Veterans In-Service Injury Network?
You may be able to access VISIN if you:
- are a UK armed forces veteran
- live in Scotland
- have a physical health condition linked to your service
- have already explored appropriate NHS treatment options, but your condition is still a concern
Veterans do not need to have been deployed or seen combat to be eligible.

How to access support
To access VISIN, you need to be referred by an NHS healthcare professional, such as:
- your GP
- a practice nurse
- a physiotherapist or occupational therapist
Typically, you will discuss your condition with your usual healthcare professional, and they can refer you if appropriate.
Once referred:
- a multidisciplinary team reviews your case
- recommendations are made
- your GP or healthcare professional discusses next steps with you
If you’re not registered with a GP, find out more about how to find a GP in Scotland. And remember to tell them you’ve served.
Why the Veterans In-Service Injury Network matters
Some veterans live with physical health conditions that continue despite treatment or appear earlier than expected due to service.
VSIN provides a way to access specialist expertise and a second clinical view, helping ensure you are getting the most appropriate care and support.
